Caitlin Looby covers Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes basin for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She has a bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Connecticut, a master's in biotechnology from Kean University, and a doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of California, Irvine. She taught science communication and trained scientists at the University of Minnesota. She's hiked up mountains to study microbes and climate change. And along the way, she's lived in every time zone in the continental United States.

Since 2022, Looby has been with the Journal Sentinel, turning out fascinating stories on everything from what's at the bottom of Lake Michigan to the value of Indigenous methods in caring for the environment to the tranquility found in Lake Superior wetlands and concerns about the scientific impacts of climate change.
