Writer Guidelines

Outrider supports journalism and multimedia storytelling about nuclear issues and climate change. We partner with creators, thought leaders, and news organizations to explain how smart policy can sustain a safe and livable planet.

Our style isn't dry or academic. We want stories that illustrate human impacts or explain an issue related to nuclear risk or climate change.

Above all, we tell stories that make a difference — on the reader, public opinion, or policy.

Some of our favorite pieces include Ambassador Tom Loftus' story about Joseph Rotblat, the Scientist Who Walked Away from Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb, Cathleen Falsani's report about twisting Russian Orthodoxy to sanctify nuclear war, and Emma Penrod's analysis of the increasing frequency of wildfires.

Pitch Guide

Pitch us a story with a compelling SEO-friendly headline. Your single-paragraph pitch should identify the central conflict and main characters, along with the who, what, where, when, why, and how. Your story should surprise, inform, and entertain our readers. It should explore friction, change, or solutions.

We publish everything from investigative articles and expert analyses to interviews and book excerpts. We prefer narrative work and rarely feature personal essays. However, we're open to new ideas. We like to publish fresh, diverse voices. Show us something compelling!

We're looking for under-reported narratives about climate change and nuclear issues. We prefer a timely news peg and stories that anticipate trends. We want to drive the cultural conversation.

Typically, our word counts run between 1,000-1,200 words, but we're open to pitches out of that range. Our standard rate is $1,000 per story.

Send story pitches via Andy Adams at andy@outrider.org. We're eager to hear from you!
