What would happen if a nuclear bomb went off in your backyard?
We wanted to answer this question with a visually compelling multimedia experience, so we partnered with Bluecadet to design a location-based interactive that made it easy to learn how a bomb blast would affect your neighborhood.
To make the bomb blast as realistic and accurate as possible, we teamed up with Alex Wellerstein, an acclaimed science and nuclear technology historian and a Stevens Institute of Technology professor. We built our bomb blast in close collaboration with Alex and modeled its functionality on his online nuclear weapon effects simulator, the NUKEMAP.
In its first month, more than 1.4 million people viewed the bomb blast, and it was featured in major media outlets worldwide, including coverage by The Verge, Fast Company, Motherboard, and IFL Science. The interactive has received multiple design awards, including the FWA Desktop + Mobile Site of the Day, Awwwards Desktop + Mobile Site of the Day, and the Communication Arts Webpick.
Since launching the bomb blast in 2018, people from around the globe have engaged with the interactive more than 8 million times, and it remains the most popular part of Outrider’s website.
